Althea Gibson was known as the “Jackie Robinson of Tennis”,
the first African American to compete on the professional circuit.
In 1958, she was the #1 female athlete in the world, winning in
singles and doubles at Wimbledon, the US Open,
the Australian Open and the French Open.
She also broke the race barrier in golf, becoming the first
African American in the LPGA.
